Join us in creating an ATSU Chapter of Active Minds!

  • What are the goals of Active Minds chapters?

Student-led chapters work to raise mental health awareness, promote positive mental health, educate their peers about the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and encourage students to reach out for help when needed. Chapters play an important role in referring students to resources on campus that can help.

  • What can chapters do on campus?

Like most student organizations, chapters hold regular planning meetings, usually about once a month, to plan campus-wide events, programs and initiatives. These events range from Active Minds national programs to a host of innovative events and initiatives . Some activities include tabling, speakers, discussion panels, movie screenings, stress relief activities, art and music events, depression screenings, and social events.

  • Are Active Minds chapters peer support groups?

Active Minds chapters are not support groups and do not provide mental health services of any kind. While we recognize the immense value of peer support, the mission of Active Minds chapters is to raise awareness, educate and de-stigmatize help-seeking.

  • What is involved in starting a chapter?

To start a chapter of Active Minds, start by gaining some traction on campus by building key partnerships. Schedule a meeting with your school’s Counseling and Psychological Services to discuss ways in which you can work together and reach out to faculty or staff who may be interested in serving as the chapter’s advisor. Another crucial step in the process is to recruit engaged and committed students to lead the chapter. You’ll need at least three student leaders on board before you can register your chapter with Active Minds, at least one of whom must be an underclassman. Lastly, all chapters of Active Minds must be a recognized student organization at your school.
